Argonne Equinox-Workday Sunday March 15th

Water service was temporarily disrupted last week due to a leak at the main water valve. Ed Dierauf (plot #54) traced the problem back to a leaky valve which needed tightening. Water service was resumed and quite a bit was accomplished.

  • Two new seedlings were planted to replace those that had recently perished.
  • The adopt a tree program is now underway, and there are just a few more trees needing some basic care like watering, weeding around the beds, and replenishing them with compost.
  • Sheree, new Orchard Conservator, led the Neem oil application on the existing orchard trees to deter aphid infestation.
  • Jonathan Howland (plot #59 and Garden Vice President) explained the garden's compost procurement arrangement with the city which is provided free of charge, but lately has been showing up less regularly. Sloat Garden Center sells an organic plant mix in 2 cubic yard bags that is a reliable alternative when the garden's compost pile runs low.
  • The garden is now seeking a Quartermaster to oversee the equipment in the tool shed and attend the three annual garden board meetings. Though the board membership has remained remarkably stable over the years new gardeners with an interest in garden leadership are encouraged to participate in steering the garden's future direction.
